"Pete" Dear 67, a retired Mississippi State Highway Patrol dispatcher, of 3547 Drive, died of respiratory arrest at Hinds General Hospital. Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Wright Ferguson Funeral Home with burial in the Florence Cemetery.

Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Dear, a Greenville native, received a full baseball scholarship to Mississippi State University but left college to join the FBI. He was "an Army veteran of World War II where he served as a member of the First Infantry Division known as the "Big Red One." He was part of the Normandy invasion in 1944.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Florence. In 1960, Mr. Dear began a career that would span 27 years as a dispatcher with the Mississippi Highway Patrol in Jackson. He retired in June 1987.

"His 1 trademark throughout the Highway Patrol was the way he answered the phone," said Master Sgt. Billy Brewer. "He would grab the phone and say just as distinctly as could be, Highway Patrol, When people talk about Pete, they talk about the way he answered the phone," he said. Brewer worked with Mr. Dear in the radio room in Jackson for a little more than a year before he went to cadet school to become a sworn officer in August 1966.

'A dispatcher and radio operator is the main nerve system of the Highway Patrol. You wouldn't operate without them. Glenda Denise Cain, the daughter of Eddie and Dorothy Cain of the Washington community, was shot once in the face and once in the back with a shotgun, authorities said. Glenda's cousin, Jerrod Wayne Evans, 14, was charged with capital murder Thursday. He was charged Friday with sexual battery after the autopsy's findings, Adams County Sheriff Tommy Ferrell said. Glenda's body was found in a ravine Thursday at 1:30 p.m. near her home about six miles north of Natchez.
