Great question! Thank you for asking! You certainly can. I would recommend drying the fruit with some paper towels so they don’t get everything soggy.

Then, make sure to bake the crumble long enough so that the fruit filling comes to a profuse simmer at the edges of the pan. This shows that the cornstarch has been activated enough to thicken the juices, turning them supple and silky.

What does putting sugar on berries do? ›

Scientifically, the sugar draws out the fruit's water, making the fruit softer and creating a syrup. Of course, the fruit also tastes sweeter.

How many berries is too much in a day? ›

Berries. I recommend one daily serving of berries (half cup fresh or frozen, or a quarter cup dried) and three daily servings of other fruit (a medium-sized fruit, a cup cut-up fruit, or a quarter cup dried). Why do I single out berries? Berries are the healthiest fruits—due in part to their plant pigments.

How do you make apple crumble less watery? ›

The best way to prevent a watery apple crisp is to use a thickener in the filling – some recipes use flour, but I've chosen to use cornstarch in this recipe (or arrowroot starch, which can be substituted 1:1 for cornstarch) because I think it provides superior thickening power.

How do you thicken fruit puree? ›

The best way is to boil the sauce down until it's as thick as you want it, but it takes a lot of fruit to do it that way. There are other thickeners: tapioca starch, potato starch, agar, various kinds of grain and bean flour, pectin. Each has it's own flavour and texture.

The ingredient list for a crumble or crisp is relatively short, but don't be tempted to leave out the cornstarch. As fruit cooks, it releases its juices, becoming saucy and soupy.
